Urban Anglers on the FLY!

Urban Anglers on the FLY!

Soul River Inc. / Sierra Club/ New Currents, Outdoors Presents fly fishing 101 class September 21, 2013 for Urban Explorers a nonprofit founded by Robert Blake whom is an active gang outreach counselor within the Portland Community. We plan to set this new introduction to Fly fishing 101 in it’s right place where it fits at home! Westmoreland Park! “Bringing the urban into the westmoreland”! Yeah!

.

Why: Westmoreland Park Casting Pond was “hand-dug” by residents during the depression as part of federal job-making efforts, the concrete pond is consider to be one of only 2-3 man-made casting ponds in the U.S.A. It is three feet deep, about 350 feet wide and 410 feet long. The pond opened in 1936 with an international fly-casting tournament.

.

So we represent the past to share the art of fly-fishing with the new young minds on it’s on turf teaching and sharing our passion of the outdoors and the lifestyle of fly fishing to 12 new young minds. These kids ages ranging form 10 –18 years of age and some are ex- gang members.

.
Robert Blake is a true soldier for these kids and a symbol of survival and hope! We are truly thankful as  Soul River Inc/ Sierra Club / New Current, Outdoors pair’s up with Urban Adventure’s to make some magic happen together for these kids. Dick Sagara from TFO rods  has also stepped up into the arena with no hesitation to help us out  along with a few Soul River fly anglers volunteers will be there representing  at a readiness to share knowledge of the sport with straight passion to teach and to work with Urban Explorers.
